Co-founders Ander and Taylor met and created SammTalk during their Erasmus+ exchange in Oslo in the start of 2017. They have a passion for improving educational methods and for creating projects that challenge young people to learn across cultural and linguistic divides.
history AND TIMELINE
From January to June we received a grant from the Norwegian government to prove that SammTalk was a tool language teachers need.
To do so, we travelled to the north of Norway and the south of Spain, presented SammTalk to 15 language teachers, and hosted two workshops.
In the end of 2018, SammTalk was honored at the European Youth Awards with an award for ‘Connecting Cultures‘, as well as a special prize from the Austrian Foreign Ministry for SammTalk’s “outstanding life improvement approach”.
While in Graz for the festival, we had the oportunity to meet some of the staff at the Centre for Modern Languages.
In December 2018, Ander visited Mertxe, an English teacher at Salesianos Barakaldo (Bilbao). Mertxe has participated in SammTalk for two full school years. During the 2018/2019 school year, she had her five English classes connected with SammTalk: three connected with Norway, one with Iceland, and one with Denmark.
In March 2019 we visited 20 schools in one of the most beautiful cities in southern Spain, Seville. We visited both public and private schools and found a lot of enthuasiasm and positive energy towards trying SammTalk during the 2019/2020 school year.
After visiting Seville, Ander visited the students from IES Rafael Pérez Estrada in Málaga (Spain) who were participating in Project 2 Videochat. Students were able to give helpful feedback and suggestions based on their experiences videochatting their partner class in Norway.
In early April, we travelled to Stockholm to meet 10 language teachers from 8 different upper-secondary schools. After that, many more were interested, so we arranged video-chat meetings with another 10 teachers from other parts of Sweden like Gothenburg, Karlstad, and Uppsala.
In early May, we flew to Lisbon to present SammTalk at the 33rd Annual Conference organized by APPI (Portuguese Association
of English Teachers).
The conference title was ‘Building Connections‘ so we could not miss this opportunity to launch SammTalk in Portugal!
